Does Window Sealing Really Lower Heating Bills? When It Does and When It Doesn't
Window sealing can reduce draughts and heat loss, but the bill depends on the whole home. Learn when sealing delivers real savings.
Cold air coming through a plastic or balcony door? We explain when adjustment restores seal compression and when seals or hardware need repair.

You feel cold near a plastic, balcony or patio door even though it is closed. The first suspect is usually the seals, but the sensation alone does not show where the problem is. Air can enter between the door leaf and the frame or through the frame or threshold joint, or you may simply be feeling cooled air sinking off a cold pane of glass.
If the position of the door leaf has shifted or the locking points no longer provide proper compression, professional plastic door adjustment can restore an even fit against the frame. Adjustment will not, however, fix a hardened gasket, damaged hardware or a leaking joint between the frame and the building structure.
So the question “will adjustment improve the seal?” is better asked more precisely: is the cold air caused by too little compression of the door leaf, or by something else entirely? Below we explain what adjustment really changes, what it cannot change, and how to tell the need for adjustment from the need for repair.
Adjustment can change the height, lateral position and compression of the door leaf, provided the specific hardware system allows it.
More compression is not automatically better: excessive compression can make closing harder and put extra load on the hardware.
A balcony door stopper only holds the door; it does not do the job of the locking mechanism and does not seal the whole perimeter.
If the gasket, a hinge, a locking element or the frame-to-threshold joint itself is damaged, adjustment alone will not be enough.
The real cause is found by assessing how the whole door operates, not just one spot where cold air is felt.
Door hardware systems differ, but most allow the height of the door leaf, its position relative to the frame and the closing compression to be corrected. The aim of adjustment is not to “press as hard as possible” but to make the leaf close correctly, the locking elements reach their positions precisely and the gasket be compressed evenly.
If the leaf has dropped or shifted, the gasket may be squeezed too hard in one place and barely touch the frame in another. In that case, a properly performed adjustment can reduce air leakage and at the same time make the door easier to close.
The opposite situation matters too: excessive compression is no guarantee of a tight seal. The door may become hard to lock, the handle may need more force, and the hardware and gasket may be loaded more than the system is designed for. That is why there is no single universal screw position or “winter mode” that suits every plastic door.
The sensation at the door may be similar, but the causes differ. And it is the cause that determines whether adjustment will help.
This is the situation where adjustment can be most effective. If the locking points no longer engage precisely, the leaf sits incorrectly or the closed door has noticeable play, correcting the position and compression can restore a more even fit.
On a cold day, the inner surface of the glass can be considerably cooler than the room air. Air cooled against it sinks downward and can be felt as a cold air current, even though no outside air is coming directly through the joint between the leaf and the frame. In this case, more compression will not solve the problem.
If air is entering not around the perimeter of the door leaf but through the installation joint at the frame or threshold, adjusting the hardware will not seal that spot. It takes a separate assessment of exactly where the air is moving and whether the connection between the door and the building structure is intact.
Adjustment is the logical first step when the door has no obviously damaged parts but its operation has changed. These are the situations most worth checking:
the door leaf has started touching the frame or the threshold;
you have to lift or push the door extra to close it;
the locking points no longer engage as smoothly as before;
the closed leaf has more play in one spot;
air movement is felt only at a specific point around the leaf-to-frame perimeter;
the door has started operating unevenly after an earlier do-it-yourself adjustment.
None of these signs is a final diagnosis on its own. A stiffer handle, for example, can result both from an incorrect leaf position and from damaged hardware. Adjustment is justified only when the inspection shows that the parts still work and the problem lies in their position or interaction.
If the main symptom is that the door does not latch or keeps coming open again, we explain separately why plastic doors won't stay closed. This article focuses not on the closing mechanics but on the limits of restoring the seal.
Three different parts of a balcony door are often confused. A balcony door stopper holds an unlocked door in place, for example when you step out onto the balcony and pull the door closed from outside. It is not the main locking mechanism and does not create even compression around the whole perimeter of the door.
The locking mechanism transfers the movement of the handle to several hardware points. When the door is locked, these points must engage precisely with their counterparts in the frame and press the leaf against it. The gasket fills the remaining gap, but it cannot by itself pull in a leaf that sits incorrectly.
So a weak stopper, a stiff handle and an air leak can all appear at the same time without being a single fault. Replacing the stopper alone will not improve the seal if the real problem is the position of the leaf or the locking points.
Adjustment changes the position of working parts; it does not restore a physically damaged component. A broader solution is needed when at least one of the following is found:
the gasket is torn, has come out of its groove, is the wrong type or has lost its ability to seal;
a hinge, a locking element or another hardware part has significant play, is deformed or broken;
the correct position of the leaf cannot be restored within the adjustment range;
the handle or locking mechanism does not work even after the leaf has been aligned;
air enters through the frame, threshold or wall joint rather than around the perimeter of the leaf.
In such cases, targeted plastic door repair is carried out: the identified part is repaired or replaced, rather than automatically replacing all the hardware or the entire door. The final scope of work and the price are agreed only after the inspection.
Before booking a technician, it is worth recording the symptom precisely rather than adjusting anything. This helps to distinguish faster between a sealing problem, a need for adjustment and a need for repair.
Open and close the door slowly. Note whether it catches in the same place every time.
Check whether the handle moves evenly through its full travel and whether it needs an unusual amount of force.
With the door closed, gently push it on the handle side and compare the play at the top and at the bottom.
Observe whether the air movement is felt between the leaf and the frame, or at the threshold and the frame-to-wall joint.
Inspect the gasket: has it come out of its groove, is it torn or twisted?
The sheet-of-paper test can show that compression differs from place to place, but it cannot tell whether the leaf position, the gasket, a locking point or another part is to blame. It is only a rough comparison, not a final diagnosis.
We do not recommend turning every visible screw yourself. Adjustment points and directions differ between systems, and on some doors the hinges are concealed or can only be adjusted after removing protective covers. An imprecise correction can improve one spot and make another worse.
The inspection starts with the full movement of the door: how the leaf opens, where it catches, how the handle works and whether the locking points reach their positions. Then the condition of the hinges and the rest of the hardware, the position of the leaf, the compression, the gasket and the possible air entry points are assessed.
After the correction, the door must be checked again: does it close without unusual force, does it lock without play, and has the compression become more even? If the adjustment range is not enough or the fault remains, that is when moving on to repair is justified.
This sequence protects against replacing parts unnecessarily. It also prevents adjustment from masking a damaged part that would cause the same problem again after a short time.
Adjustment is not a periodic ritual to be performed simply by the calendar. It is done according to the actual condition of the door. In day-to-day care, it matters more to watch for changes in operation, not to force a sticking handle, and to maintain the hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions for the specific system.
For more on safe cleaning, hardware care and the limits of “winter mode”, read our guide on maintaining plastic balcony doors. Maintenance helps you notice a change earlier, but it does not replace diagnostics once the door has lost its seal or started to catch.
If you feel air movement through a plastic, balcony or patio door, the leaf catches, the handle is stiff or the closed door has play, the first step is to establish the cause. The technician's visit and diagnostics of all your doors are free of charge. Work begins only once the customer has approved the proposed solution and the quote.
