Why Plastic Doors Won't Stay Closed

Do your plastic or balcony doors fail to close, catch on the frame or not latch? Learn when adjustment is enough and when repair is needed.

Plastic door with handle — why the sash no longer stays closed

You close a plastic or balcony door, but it does not latch the way it used to: you have to push the sash harder, lift the handle, the door catches on the frame or springs open again after closing. These signs do not necessarily mean the handle has failed or that the whole door needs replacing.

The cause can be a shifted sash position, the condition of the hinges or other hardware, locking points that no longer align properly, or insufficient compression. That is why it is not always possible to identify the responsible part from a symptom alone.

Below we explain what you can safely notice yourself, how different causes are told apart, and when balcony door adjustment is enough and when plastic door repair is already needed.

Quick summary

If your plastic door no longer closes the way it used to, pay attention to:

  • whether the sash has started touching the frame or threshold,

  • whether the handle moves smoothly and reaches its usual positions,

  • whether closing requires extra lifting or pressing,

  • whether the door stopper still holds the door in a closed position,

  • whether the closed door sits evenly with no noticeable play.

These signs help you understand where to look for the problem, but the exact cause can only be identified by assessing the whole way the door operates.

Why the door sash position changes

The sash of a plastic or balcony door is carried by the hinges, and during closing the hardware elements have to align precisely with the parts on the frame. A larger and heavier sash loads these elements more, but weight alone does not tell you when a problem will appear.

Over time the sash position can change due to intensive use, hardware adjustment changes, hinge condition or other construction features. Sometimes a small shift is enough for the door to start catching or for the locking elements to no longer align as smoothly as before.

That is why the symptom “the door will not close” is not a single specific diagnosis. In one case adjusting the sash position is enough; in another the hinges, the locking mechanism or another hardware part need to be assessed.

What you can check yourself

First, slowly open and close the door several times. Watch whether the sash touches the frame or threshold anywhere, whether the handle moves without unusual force and whether the closing feel changes at different positions.

It is also worth noting whether the problem appeared suddenly or grew gradually. A sudden change in operation may have a different cause than catching or heavier closing that developed over time.

Some door systems use hidden hinges, so their condition or adjustment points may not be visible at a glance. Because of this, a visual inspection alone is not always enough to determine whether the problem lies specifically with the hinges.

We do not recommend replacing the handle or lock, or turning all adjustment screws on your own, based on a single symptom. Adjustment points and limits differ between hardware systems, and an incorrect correction can create an additional problem.

How the real cause is identified

During diagnostics it is important to check not only the spot where the door catches. The sash position relative to the frame, the condition of the hinges and other hardware, the operation of the handle and locking mechanism, the compression, and how the door closes through the entire movement are all assessed.

Such an inspection makes it possible to tell an adjustment problem apart from real wear or failure of a part. For example, if a locking element does not reach its position because the sash has shifted, replacing that element alone would not remove the underlying cause.

It is also important that different door systems are adjusted differently. There is no single universal screw position or adjustment scheme that fits every plastic or balcony door.

When door adjustment can be enough

When the main hardware parts are not damaged and the problem is related to sash position, compression or closing accuracy, plastic door adjustment is often the first step. Its aim is to restore correct door operation without replacing parts that do not need replacing.

During adjustment the sash position and compression may be corrected and it is then checked whether the door closes and locks smoothly. The specific actions depend on the hardware system installed in the door and on the identified problem.

If the door has started catching or closing with more effort, it is not worth waiting until it needs even more force to close. An early check helps you understand whether the problem can still be solved by adjustment or whether components are already worn.

When adjustment alone is no longer enough

Adjustment will not solve the problem if a hinge is mechanically damaged, a hardware part is broken or heavily worn, the locking mechanism does not work, or the available adjustment range is not enough to restore correct operation.

In that case plastic door repair is needed — only the part whose condition genuinely prevents the door from working properly is repaired or replaced. The solution should be chosen after diagnostics, not based on a single symptom.

This is especially important when the door does not latch. That symptom does not prove a lock fault by itself: first it needs to be checked whether the sash is in the right position and whether the locking elements reach their spots in the frame accurately.

What is better to avoid

One of the most common mistakes is trying to compensate for the problem by force. If you have to constantly lift the door, press it hard or pull on the handle, that kind of use is not a solution and can put extra strain on the hardware.

Another mistake is replacing the most accessible part just because it seems related to the symptom. The handle transmits movement, and the plastic door mechanism reacts to that automatically, but heavier handle operation can also be a consequence of other operational faults in the door.

The safest rule is simple: first identify what has changed, and only then adjust or replace a specific part.

When it is worth calling a technician

An inspection is worthwhile if the door has started catching, does not latch, requires unusual force on the handle, can be moved more than before when closed, or if the problem quickly returns after your own adjustment.

The technician visit and diagnostics are free of charge. After the check it can be clearly said whether adjustment will be enough or whether a specific hardware part needs to be repaired or replaced. The work is carried out only after the solution has been agreed with the client.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our window and door repair services

Some hardware systems allow adjustment, but the adjustment points, directions and limits differ between systems. If you do not know your specific system or the door already catches and closes with difficulty, it is safer to identify the cause first.
Not necessarily. A door can fail to latch when, due to a shifted sash position, the locking elements no longer align with the parts on the frame. Lock replacement is justified only after its wear or failure has actually been diagnosed.
This becomes clear after inspecting the hardware condition and adjustment range. If a part is damaged, has excessive play, does not function, or if proper door operation cannot be restored within the available adjustment, repair or replacement may be needed.
Yes. When the sash position changes, it may start touching the frame or threshold, and closing may become harder. However, catching alone is not enough to determine the exact cause — the hinges and the rest of the hardware also need to be assessed.
There is no universal duration. The time depends on the door construction, the hardware system, the nature of the problem and whether adjustment is sufficient or a fault is identified.
The cost depends on the door construction and the required work. The technician visit and diagnostics are free of charge, so the problem can be assessed and the solution and price agreed before the work is carried out.
Yes, the initial inspection and our technician's visit to assess the work are completely free. No hidden fees and no obligations. If you decide to go ahead, the technician will prepare a clear quote on the spot, explain everything to you and, if you agree, can usually do the work right away during the same visit.
Of course. We provide a warranty both for the work carried out and for the materials used, in line with the laws of the Republic of Lithuania.
The price depends on the type of window, the issue, and the materials needed. When the technician arrives, they give you an exact quote on site with no hidden charges, and you decide yourself whether you want to proceed with the repair.
Yes, our window service operates all over Lithuania: in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Panevėžys, Šiauliai and other cities and towns.
Booking a free visit is very simple. Just give us a call or fill in the online booking form – in both cases it only takes a few minutes.
In most cases repair is enough: replacing seals or mechanisms, improving insulation, adjusting the fittings, cleaning and lubricating the hardware. This is usually much cheaper than installing brand new windows.
Repair is cheaper, because you don't have to buy new windows, remove the old ones, dispose of them or redo the interior finishes afterwards. Repair saves both time and money and is significantly more cost‑effective.
We work with all major brands: Rehau, Veka, KBE, Schüco, Salamander, Aluplast and many others. Our technicians are trained to work with the specific mechanisms used by each manufacturer.
Yes, you can pay by all major bank cards, by bank transfer or in cash. Payment is made after the work is completed.
Yes, we provide services all year round. In winter we use specific methods so that the room doesn't get cold during the work and your comfort is kept to a maximum.
