Window Maintenance Guide: Plastic, Wood & Aluminium Windows
Windows are one of the most frequently used parts of any home. Proper maintenance not only extends their lifespan but helps avoid costly repairs. This guide covers all key maintenance areas — from adjustment and lubrication to seasonal preparation and accessories.
1. Window Adjustment
Correct adjustment is the foundation of window care. Plastic windows have three positions: summer (normal compression), winter (increased compression for sealing) and ventilation. If a window starts sticking, is harder to open, or drafts appear, it's time for professional window adjustment. Recommended twice a year — before winter and before summer.
2. Gasket Replacement & Sealing
Gaskets harden and lose elasticity over time, becoming the main cause of drafts and heat loss. Professional gasket replacement or window sealing restores full airtightness. Average gasket lifespan: 8–12 years.
3. Lubrication & Cleaning
Window hardware (hinges, handles, locking mechanisms) requires regular lubrication with silicone oil. Never use WD-40 or grease — these attract dust and damage mechanisms. Professional cleaning and lubrication is recommended once a year.
4. Seasonal Preparation
Before winter: switch to winter position, check gasket condition, lubricate hardware, check for condensation between glass panes. Before summer: return to summer position, clean drainage slots, check ventilation system.
5. Wood Windows
Wood windows require more intensive care — protective painting or varnishing every 2–3 years, and annual adjustment as wood changes dimensions seasonally.
6. Aluminium Windows & Doors
Aluminium windows need periodic hardware lubrication. Plastic balcony doors settle faster due to frequent use — annual checks are recommended.
7. Accessories
Mosquito nets, ventilation systems, burglar protection, handles and handles with locks improve functionality without major works.
8. When to Call a Professional
Simple lubrication and cleaning can be done at home. Adjustment, gasket replacement, glass unit replacement and hardware repair require specialist tools. We offer free window inspection across Lithuania. See our service prices.
Frequently Asked Questions About Window Maintenance
Practical answers from our technicians
- We recommend adjusting twice a year — before winter (switch to winter position) and in spring (return to summer position). This ensures optimal sealing and slows hardware wear.
- Try the paper slip test: insert a piece of paper between the window and frame and close it — if it slips out without resistance, the gaskets have lost elasticity. Other signs: drafts, moisture on the inner frame, higher heating bills in winter.
- Condensation between glass layers means the unit's hermetic seal is broken — moisture is getting between the panes. This cannot be fixed at home and requires glass unit replacement. Condensation on the inside surface is a normal ventilation issue.
- Annual window servicing including adjustment, lubrication and inspection typically costs from €10–15 per window. Free technician visit and inspection included. Much more cost-effective than waiting for a major repair.
