How to Maintain Plastic Balcony Doors?
How to maintain plastic balcony doors, what you can safely check yourself and when maintenance alone is no longer enough.
Window sealing can reduce draughts and heat loss, but the bill depends on the whole home. Learn when sealing delivers real savings.

After sealing, the draught in a room may disappear and the temperature may feel more even, but next month's bill will not necessarily drop by a noticeable amount. That does not mean the work was pointless. Heating costs are driven by the whole home, the weather outside, the chosen indoor temperature and the way consumption is calculated.
Professional window sealing can reduce the uncontrolled flow of outside air through leaky points at the sash, frame or installation joint. But it does not change the thermal properties of the glass unit or the profile, so not every cold sensation near a window means that sealing will noticeably lower the bill.
The honest answer is simple: if outside air really moves through the window and that specific leaky spot is fixed, the heat demand can go down. If the window is already tight and the room cools through the glass, walls or ventilation, extra sealing will have almost no financial effect.
Sealing reduces air leakage, but it does not change the thermal properties of the glass unit.
The biggest benefit is expected when a clear, real leak is found.
Comfort usually improves first: the draught drops and the temperature near the window becomes more even.
No exact change in the bill can be promised in advance — it depends on the whole home, the heating system and weather conditions.
Below we explain when sealing can help you save, when the benefit will mostly be better comfort, and when you need to look for a completely different problem.
Even a perfectly tight window transfers part of the heat to the outside through the glass, the frame and the edge of the glass unit. This property of the structure is described by the heat transfer coefficient, usually marked U. The lower its value, the better the window holds heat in.
Air leakage through unsealed points is a completely different phenomenon. Cold outside air enters the room, and warmed air escapes. Sealing can affect exactly this part of the losses, but it does not turn an old glass unit into a new one and does not change its thermal properties.
This distinction explains why it is sometimes cold near a window even when no real draught comes through it. A cold glass surface cools the indoor air next to it, so you can feel movement that resembles a draught. In such a case, dealing only with gaskets or the installation joint will not necessarily change the feeling as much as expected.
Before judging the benefit, you need to find where the airtightness is being lost. Different locations can cause a similar cold sensation, but they do not need the same solution.
Between the sash and the frame. For a gasket to do its job, the sash must close correctly and press evenly against the frame. If the sash has shifted or the locking points work unevenly, window adjustment may be needed. If the window gaskets themselves are damaged, out of their groove or badly chosen, replacement is considered.
Between the frame and the wall. The sash gasket cannot seal the installation joint. If air movement is clearly felt along the frame-to-wall edge, that location must be assessed — not the gasket replaced again.
Through the glass or the profile itself. This is not an air gap that can simply be filled or pressed harder. If the problem is in the glass unit, profile or thermal bridge, a different solution is needed.
A tangible benefit is expected when three conditions meet: there is a real air leak, its location is identified precisely, and the heating system can respond to a lower heat demand. The larger the leak, the more problem windows there are, and the greater the temperature difference between outside and inside, the more energy can be lost with the moving air.
A good sign is a repeating air flow felt in one specific spot, especially on a windy day. Still, a hand held to the window is not a final diagnosis: a real intake of outside air must be told apart from indoor air movement caused by cold glass.
Once a real leak is fixed, the heating system may need less energy to hold the same indoor temperature. Yet there is no universal 5, 10 or 15 percent result — in one home windows may be the main issue, in another they are only a small share of total losses.
A draught is very local: a single leaky corner can make the entire spot near a window uncomfortable, even though total home energy use barely changes because of it. Once air movement near the window is removed, it often feels nicer right away, the room temperature becomes more even and you no longer need to avoid the area next to the window.
The bill depends on more factors. If the thermostat setting stays the same after the work, but the weather turns much colder, consumption can even rise. In an apartment building, the result may also be masked by shared heating cost allocation, the influence of neighbouring units, or the fact that the charge is not calculated purely on your own flat's real usage.
So the first good sign of a result is not a percentage on the bill, but the removed air flow and more stable comfort. The financial change is evaluated later, when there is a comparable period.
One month's bills before and after the work are often not enough. For the comparison to make sense, it is worth following a few rules:
Compare not only the euro amount, but also the quantity of heat or energy used, if it is shown on the bill. The tariff can change even when consumption falls.
Pick periods of similar coldness. October and January bills, without accounting for the weather, do not show only the effect of sealing.
Keep your indoor temperature and ventilation habits similar. More frequent airing or a higher thermostat setting can hide the savings.
Judge over a longer period, not a single cold day. Short-term consumption is affected by sun, wind, number of people at home and other daily factors.
In an apartment building, check how heating costs are split. If part of the charge depends on the whole building's use or on floor area, an individual improvement may show up weakly on the bill.
Such an assessment is not as fast as an advertising promise, but it allows you to tell a real result apart from a change in weather, tariff or usage habits.
When no air really moves through the window, but it feels cold because of a low temperature of the inner glass or frame surface.
When the glass unit is damaged, moisture builds up between the panes, or the problem is linked to the thermal properties of the structure itself.
When the biggest heat losses are through the walls, roof, floors or other parts of the building.
When someone tries to seal a specially installed trickle vent or another ventilation element — controlled ventilation and random draught are not the same thing.
If at the same time the sash catches, the handle sticks, the window no longer closes or there is visible mechanical damage, plastic window repair may be needed instead of yet another layer of sealing.
Pinpoint the spot: whether the cold is felt across the whole glass, at one edge of the sash, near the handle, hinges, or the frame-to-wall joint.
Compare a calm day with a windy one. Air movement that clearly depends on the wind more often indicates a real leak.
Slowly open and close the window. Notice whether the sash has started catching and whether the handle needs more force than before.
Inspect the visible gaskets: whether they are not torn, not out of their groove, and whether there are no gaps in the corners.
Do not turn all adjustment points to the maximum compression and do not block the ventilation openings. More compression is not a universal solution for airtightness.
A thin strip of paper or a tissue can help you notice where air moves, but it does not show the exact cause and does not replace an airtightness check. If the gaskets have already been replaced, in a separate guide we explain why there can still be a draught after new window gaskets.
Well-done work removes the identified air leak without making the window harder to operate and without closing the intended ventilation paths. After the work the technician should clearly explain which spot was leaky, what was done, and what you can reasonably expect from this solution.
A reliable specialist does not promise a specific percentage off the bill over the phone. First it has to be assessed whether the problem really is airtightness, or whether it is caused by the glass unit, hardware, installation joint or other parts of the building.
Sealing of plastic windows can reduce heat demand when it removes a real uncontrolled inflow of air. It very clearly improves comfort in many cases, but it is not a universal way to cut heating bills in any home.
The technician's visit and the diagnostics of all windows at our company are free. After the inspection we will tell you where airtightness is being lost, what work is really needed and how much it will cost — the decision is yours.
We will assess your windows free of charge and suggest the most suitable solution.

Has your window in Panevėžys started catching as the weather cools? We separate three different situations: sash catching, hardware fault and air leakage.

You replaced the gaskets but it still feels cold by the window? Before ordering a second replacement, check four separate sealing points — from the cold-glass sensation to the frame-to-wall joint.

Sash catching or handle harder to turn in a new-build apartment? Before an adjustment or a warranty claim, it is worth documenting five simple facts — reviewed from Vilnius cases.

Adjusted the window twice and the draught is back? Adjustment has a limit — when a component is physically worn, no correction will hold for long. How a technician tells when adjustment is enough and when it is time for component replacement.

Window condition in older Kaunas apartment blocks isn't set by building age alone — it depends on when each window was fitted, its hardware and its service history. Here's what to check first and when it's worth calling a technician.
