Why Do Plastic Windows Fog Up? When It’s Normal and When to Worry
Waking up to water droplets on the window? It doesn’t always mean the window is broken. We explain when condensation is normal — and when it’s a warning sign.
A new window should work flawlessly — so when the sash starts catching the frame or the handle turns harder, it's natural to suspect a defect. But the need for adjustment alone doesn't mean the window is poor quality. Here's how to tell when adjustment is enough and when you should first contact the installer.

A new window should work flawlessly – so when, after a few months or years, the sash starts catching the frame, the window handle moves harder or the pressure weakens in one spot, it is natural to suspect an installation error or defect.
But the need for adjustment alone does not mean the window is poor quality. A window's operation depends on more than one detail: sash weight, hardware position, intensity of use, temperature changes and how stably the whole window geometry is maintained. Because of this, even a new window can develop a small mechanical shift over time.
The key question is not "can a new window go out of adjustment?" but "why has this particular window changed?". The answer determines whether adjustment will be enough, or whether you should first contact the company that installed the windows.
If the window worked well for a while and the change appeared gradually, the sash and hardware position are often checked first. If the problem was present from the day of installation, quickly appears in several windows or is accompanied by visible flaws in the installation seam, frame or other structural areas, adjustment alone is not the place to start.
Adjustment corrects the mechanical position of a working window. It cannot fix an incorrectly installed frame, a damaged component or a defect in the installation seam.
An opening sash constantly rests on its hinges and works together with the multi-point window hardware mechanism. Every opening, closing and tilting loads the same system. Even a small change in position can be felt before it becomes visible to the naked eye: the handle needs to be turned harder, the sash lightly brushes the frame on closing, or the pressure becomes different at one point along the perimeter.
Environmental conditions also contribute. The dimensions of profiles and metal hardware parts change with temperature, so in hot and cold weather the same window can behave slightly differently. In a newly built home, additional structural movement may occur, but the age of the building alone is not enough to conclude that it caused a specific window's problem.
Correct diagnostics therefore begins not with the preliminary conclusion "the house is settling", but with an inspection of the window itself.
There is no single universal indicator, but a lot is revealed by when and how the problem appeared.
Important: if the window is still under installation or manufacturer warranty and a defect is suspected, read the warranty terms and contact the company that installed the windows before any third-party repair.
Good adjustment does not start with a hex key. First, you need to understand what has changed. The technician assesses how the sash sits in the frame, where it contacts, whether the closing points work evenly, how the handle moves and whether there is any obvious damage to the hardware, gaskets or frame.
Only then is it decided whether the problem is really something adjustment can correct. This is especially important for a new window: too aggressive correction in one place can briefly remove the symptom, but not the cause.
If it is established that the problem lies in the position of the sash or hardware, precise PVC window adjustment can restore smooth closing and even pressure without replacing working components.
For a new window, adjustment should not replace diagnostics when:
In such cases it is important to identify the cause, because ever-tighter pressure or constant correction of one place can only postpone the real solution.
A draught in itself does not prove that a new window needs adjustment. Air can enter due to uneven sash pressure, but the cause can also be the tightness of the installation, a damaged gasket or another specific area. So on a new window you shouldn't immediately "tighten" all the closing points.
It's more useful to identify exactly where air movement is felt and whether the mechanical operation of the window has changed at the same time. If the handle, sash position and closing have not changed, adjustment alone may not be the solution needed. When gaskets are the cause, window gasket replacement or targeted window sealing often helps.
If the window is new and the problem may be related to installation or a product defect, keep the installation documents and check the specific warranty terms. Different manufacturers and installers have different procedures, so you shouldn't assume in advance that every adjustment need is or isn't a warranty case.
The practical principle is simple: if the problem was there from the start or there are signs the cause is more than just hardware position, contact the installer first. If the window worked well for a long time and a small mechanical change has appeared, an assessment of the adjustment need can be made.
The idea that a well-installed new window never needs adjustment is too simplistic. Adjustment in itself is neither proof of a defect nor a mandatory calendar-based maintenance procedure for a new window. It is needed when an inspection shows that the sash position or hardware operation has changed.
It is therefore most valuable to observe not the window's age but its operation: whether the sash moves freely, whether it closes without force, whether the handle movement is unchanged and whether the pressure remains even. When a change appears, the cause is better identified early – before the mechanism starts working under additional load.
If a warranty issue has already been ruled out, we can assess whether adjustment will solve the problem.
