Autumn view through a plastic window — time to check window condition before the heating season

Autumn Window Check

In early autumn, window problems often do not yet interfere with daily life, but on cooler days it becomes easier to notice whether the sash closes smoothly, whether there is a noticeable draught and whether the seals have remained elastic.

Before the heating season it is worth spending time on a simple window check. Its goal is not to adjust the hardware yourself, but to spot in time the signs indicating that a window may need maintenance, adjustment or repair.

Noticing a problem early lets you assess its cause before colder weather, when window airtightness and smooth operation become especially important.

Below are a few simple checks you can do yourself, and signs that make it worth contacting a window technician.

Quick summary

Before the heating season, four things are worth checking:

  • whether the window sashes open and close easily,

  • whether the seals are not hardened, cracked or otherwise damaged,

  • whether a closed sash sits evenly against the frame,

  • whether the handle moves smoothly and without unusual resistance.

Such an inspection helps you notice changes in time and decide whether the window needs more professional diagnostics.

Why check windows before the heating season

As the weather cools, it becomes easier to notice some problems that may be less noticeable in summer. For example, you might feel a draught, notice uneven sash contact or a heavier handle movement.

The point of an autumn check is not to carry out work just for the sake of the season, but to assess the actual condition of the windows. If a window operates smoothly and is airtight, there is no need to adjust it just as a precaution.

What you can check yourself

First, open and close the window a few times. The handle should move smoothly, and the sash should not catch on the frame or require unusual force. Increased resistance does not yet indicate a specific fault, but it is a signal that hardware and sash condition are worth checking.

Next, inspect the seals along the entire window perimeter. They should not be cracked, popped out of the groove or obviously hardened. Appearance alone is not always enough to determine the cause of a leak, so a draught does not necessarily mean gasket replacement is required.

Do you need to increase window compression before winter?

The so-called “winter mode” is often mentioned online, but it is not a universal feature of every window. Hardware and its adjustment options vary between manufacturers, so settings should not be changed based on the season alone.

If the sash does not seat evenly, you feel a draught or the window closes with difficulty, the first task is to identify the cause. Compression adjustment can be one part of the window adjustment, but greater compression is not automatically a better solution for every window.

If you are not familiar with the adjustment options of your specific hardware, it is safer not to change the settings yourself. During a check it is enough to assess whether the window operates smoothly and whether a closed sash sits evenly.

When it is worth calling a window technician

It is worth contacting a window technician if the sash catches on the frame, the handle moves heavily or unusually, a closed sash sits unevenly, or you feel a draught even though there is no visible seal damage.

In such cases, the symptom alone is not always enough to identify the cause. A technician can check sash geometry, hardware operation, hinges, compression points and seal condition, and determine whether adjustment is enough or another repair is needed.

Why a draught alone is not enough for a diagnosis

A draught is often linked to seal condition or too little compression, but there can be more causes. Air movement may be caused by an uneven sash position, hardware malfunctions, damaged seals or a leak in another part of the window.

For this reason, the goal of an autumn check is not to decide in advance what work is needed. First the condition is assessed, and adjustment or repair is only carried out when there is a real need.

What you should avoid during an autumn check

A common mistake is to try to change hardware settings straight away just because winter is approaching. If the window closes easily, the sash sits evenly and there are no other problem signs, additional adjustment may not be necessary.

The autumn check is one part of window servicing. Its main purpose is to assess the actual condition of the windows and carry out only the work that a specific window really needs.

A short autumn window check

In a few minutes you can assess the main signs:

  1. Open and close each window — note the ones whose sash catches or handle moves harder.

  2. Inspect the seals — look for cracks, deformations or missing sections.

  3. When the window is closed, pay attention to whether the sash sits evenly and whether you feel a clear draught.

If during the check you notice several different symptoms, professional diagnostics helps identify their cause. It is worth adjusting only those windows that actually need it.

After such an inspection you will see more clearly which windows work smoothly and whose condition is worth checking in more detail before the heating season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our window and door repair services

Early autumn is convenient — before colder weather and the heating season begin. The exact date matters less than noticing any potential problems in time.
Not every window has a dedicated “winter mode”. Hardware adjustment options depend on the specific system, so increasing compression on your own just because of the season is not recommended.
Not necessarily, but it is worth identifying where it comes from. Check that the sash is properly closed and that the seals are not visibly damaged. If the draught persists or the window operates worse than before, diagnostics can help identify the cause.
The technician visit and window diagnostics are free of charge. If adjustment or other repair is needed, the scope and cost of the work are agreed with you before it is carried out.
No. Seals are replaced according to their actual condition, not on a calendar. If they are elastic, undamaged and still doing their job properly, there is no need to replace them just because winter is approaching.
If the windows operate smoothly and there are no signs of a problem, nothing dramatic may happen. But if you have already noticed harder closing, a draught or other changes, it is better to identify the cause before colder weather sets in.
Yes, the initial inspection and our technician's visit to assess the work are completely free. No hidden fees and no obligations. If you decide to go ahead, the technician will prepare a clear quote on the spot, explain everything to you and, if you agree, can usually do the work right away during the same visit.
Of course. We provide a warranty both for the work carried out and for the materials used, in line with the laws of the Republic of Lithuania.
The price depends on the type of window, the issue, and the materials needed. When the technician arrives, they give you an exact quote on site with no hidden charges, and you decide yourself whether you want to proceed with the repair.
Yes, our window service operates all over Lithuania: in Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Panevėžys, Šiauliai and other cities and towns.
Booking a free visit is very simple. Just give us a call or fill in the online booking form – in both cases it only takes a few minutes.
In most cases repair is enough: replacing seals or mechanisms, improving insulation, adjusting the fittings, cleaning and lubricating the hardware. This is usually much cheaper than installing brand new windows.
Repair is cheaper, because you don't have to buy new windows, remove the old ones, dispose of them or redo the interior finishes afterwards. Repair saves both time and money and is significantly more cost‑effective.
We work with all major brands: Rehau, Veka, KBE, Schüco, Salamander, Aluplast and many others. Our technicians are trained to work with the specific mechanisms used by each manufacturer.
Yes, you can pay by all major bank cards, by bank transfer or in cash. Payment is made after the work is completed.
Yes, we provide services all year round. In winter we use specific methods so that the room doesn't get cold during the work and your comfort is kept to a maximum.
